You probably figured it out, but I've been on vacation. This required a flurry beforehand as I prepared for vacation, then the vacation itself, then the flurry afterwards as I tried to remember what I do when I'm either not in a flurry or on vacation.
We went to Holden Beach, N.C., and stayed at The Barnacle, my favorite place. I was a little girl when Jak Smyrl, my cousin and idol, carved this sea captain's head on a support beam of the house. I think I'd gotten into trouble the week before for writing on the walls, so seeing Jak carve up part of his house left quite an impression. I'd like to go to the house every year, but we don't seem to make it that often. When I see the crusty old sea captain's face, I feel like I'm visiting an old friend.
Here's my favorite reading place. I love the beach but sunburn easily. Holden Beach has a rough, challenging ocean and is often windy. Here are the before and after pictures. As you can see, I was blown out of my reading spot.

I am so jealous of all that Carolina coastline you have so close to you. In Oregon people like to make a big deal out of the fact that every foot of coast is public land. Big effing deal--it's way too cold to get any use out of it! I still remember fondly my family's beach house at Myrtle Thanksgiving of 2007 (and the great restaurant you pointed me to!).

Well at least now you can say... "I was blown away by the scenery."
I like the carving, if any of my kids had've done something like that it would've amounted to vandalism.
Actually one of them, as a 4 year old, got hold of a permanent marker pen and walked a complete circuit of the lounge room, with arm extended, leaving a single line across everything at his shoulder height. We got used to watching TV with a line three quarters of the way up the screen.
Good to see you back, Anne.
Cheers.

I have quite a bit of "carved artwork" on....let's see now....3 window sills, 2 doors, a flat decorative bannister and a bed headboard. It's a good thing the (then) 4 year-old was so darned cute or there's no telling what might have resulted fromt eh discovery of said "art".
