You just hit on one of my big pet peeves. "Axe" as "ask" makes me have twitches, so much that I just had each of my children say the word to make sure they weren't mispronouncing it.

Yes, I have some issues. :)

And occasionally, how you say it is even *more* important than what you say. Interviewers and potential new friends can overlook gaffes in what you say which may seem to be the result of nerves or that you can laugh off, but as you point out, will often dismiss up front people who can't speak plain English, because, as people endlessly reminded us when Bush came into office talking about our "nucular" weapons, it makes them sound stupid. Period. I'll go ahead and go where you didn't--it makes people sound stupid. And nowadays people are very willing to prescribe "stupid" on anybody who has a Southern *accent*, let alone somebody with common mispronunciations of the various regions.

It is a crime that such mispronunciations are let go in schoolchildren in the name of a dubious dialect.

Over here it’s pronounced ‘aahx’... but still just as annoying.
